Q1 – Reactivity Series 1 mark

Which of these metals is the most reactive?

Correct!

In the reactivity series: K, Na, Li, Ca, Mg, Al, Zn, Fe, Cu. Calcium is the most reactive of the four options.

Q2 – Reactions with Acid 1 mark

Which gas is produced when a metal reacts with a dilute acid?

Correct!

Metal + acid → salt + hydrogen. The hydrogen gas can be tested with a burning splint – it makes a squeaky pop.

Q3 – Word Equations 2 marks

Write word equations for:

  1. Magnesium reacting with sulfuric acid [1 mark]
  2. Sodium reacting with water [1 mark]
Model Answer

(a) magnesium + sulfuric acid → magnesium sulfate + hydrogen

(b) sodium + water → sodium hydroxide + hydrogen

Q4 – Displacement 1 mark

Iron is placed in copper sulfate solution. What is observed?

Correct!

Iron displaces copper because iron is more reactive. The blue Cu2+ ions leave solution (replaced by pale green Fe2+ ions) and copper metal coats the iron as a brown/orange layer.

Q5 – Oxidation/Reduction 1 mark

In terms of oxygen, what is oxidation?

Correct!

Oxidation is the gain of oxygen (or loss of electrons at Higher tier). Reduction is the loss of oxygen (or gain of electrons).

Q6 – Extraction 3 marks

Explain why iron can be extracted by heating with carbon, but aluminium cannot. Describe the method used to extract aluminium instead.

Model Answer

Iron is less reactive than carbon [1 mark], so carbon can reduce iron oxide by removing the oxygen. Aluminium is more reactive than carbon [1 mark], so carbon cannot reduce aluminium oxide. Instead, aluminium is extracted by electrolysis of molten aluminium oxide [1 mark].

Q7 – Conservation of Mass 1 mark

When zinc reacts with acid in an open beaker, the mass decreases. This is because:

Correct!

Mass is always conserved, but in an open container, the hydrogen gas produced escapes into the air. This makes it seem like mass has been lost, but the total mass of all products (including escaped gas) equals the mass of the reactants.

Q8 – Balanced Equations 5 marks

Balance the following equations and add state symbols:

  1. Fe + CuSO4 → FeSO4 + Cu
  2. Na + H2O → NaOH + H2
  3. Fe + O2 → Fe2O3
Model Answer

(a) Already balanced – add state symbols [1 mark]:

Fe(s) + CuSO4(aq) → FeSO4(aq) + Cu(s)

(b) [1 mark for balancing, 1 mark for state symbols]

2Na(s) + 2H2O(l) → 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g)

(c) [1 mark for balancing, 1 mark for state symbols]

4Fe(s) + 3O2(g) → 2Fe2O3(s)
Q9 – Displacement Prediction 1 mark

Which of these combinations will NOT produce a displacement reaction?

Correct!

Copper is less reactive than zinc, so copper cannot displace zinc from zinc sulfate solution. A less reactive metal cannot displace a more reactive metal.

Q10 – Observations 3 marks

A student adds a small piece of potassium to a trough of water. Describe three observations they would make.

Model Answer

Any three from:

  • The potassium fizzes vigorously / rapid bubbling [1 mark]
  • It melts into a silvery ball [1 mark]
  • It moves/darts around the surface of the water [1 mark]
  • A lilac/purple flame is seen [1 mark]
  • The potassium dissolves/gets smaller [1 mark]
Q11 H – Electron Transfer 1 mark

In the reaction Zn + Cu2+ → Zn2+ + Cu, what happens to the zinc?

Correct!

Zinc goes from Zn (0 charge) to Zn2+ (2+ charge). It has lost 2 electrons. Loss of electrons = oxidation. Remember OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss.

Q12 – Extraction 3 marks

Lead oxide can be reduced by carbon.

  1. Write the word equation for this reaction. [1 mark]
  2. Identify what is oxidised and what is reduced. [2 marks]
Model Answer

(a) lead oxide + carbon → lead + carbon dioxide [1 mark]

(b) Lead oxide is reduced because it loses oxygen [1 mark]. Carbon is oxidised because it gains oxygen [1 mark].

Q13 H – Mole Ratios 2 marks

For the reaction: 2Al + 3CuSO4 → Al2(SO4)3 + 3Cu

  1. State the mole ratio of aluminium to copper sulfate. [1 mark]
  2. How many moles of copper are produced when 4 moles of aluminium react? [1 mark]
Model Answer

(a) 2 : 3 (aluminium : copper sulfate) [1 mark]

(b) From the equation, 2 mol Al produces 3 mol Cu. So 4 mol Al produces 6 mol Cu. [1 mark]

Q14 – Uses of Metals 1 mark

Why is copper suitable for making water pipes?

Correct!

Copper is below hydrogen in the reactivity series, so it does not react with water. This means it won't corrode. It is also malleable (can be bent into shape), making it ideal for pipes.

Q15 – Required Practical 4 marks

A student investigates the reactivity of four metals (magnesium, zinc, iron, copper) by adding them to dilute hydrochloric acid and recording observations.

  1. Name two variables that should be controlled. [2 marks]
  2. Predict the order of reactivity from most to least reactive. [1 mark]
  3. Explain why copper does not react. [1 mark]
Model Answer

(a) Any two from: volume of acid, concentration of acid, size/mass of metal pieces, temperature [2 marks]

(b) Magnesium > Zinc > Iron > Copper [1 mark]

(c) Copper is less reactive than hydrogen (it is below hydrogen in the reactivity series), so it cannot displace hydrogen from the acid [1 mark].

Q16 H – Half Equations 3 marks

Magnesium reacts with silver nitrate solution.

  1. Write the ionic equation for this reaction. [1 mark]
  2. Write the half equation for the oxidation reaction. [1 mark]
  3. Write the half equation for the reduction reaction. [1 mark]
Model Answer

(a) Ionic equation:

Mg(s) + 2Ag+(aq) → Mg2+(aq) + 2Ag(s)

(b) Oxidation:

Mg → Mg2+ + 2e−

(c) Reduction:

Ag+ + e− → Ag

(Note: 2 silver ions each gain 1 electron, so the electrons balance with the 2 electrons lost by magnesium.)
